Amy Benson Brown, PhD
Writing Coaching for Academics Across the US, Canada, and Europe

How I Work With Authors
My coaching weaves together three, often intertwined, strands. As developmental editor, I offer feedback on drafts, helping authors to hone their arguments. As a writing productivity coach, I help people build a more effective writing process and deal with anxiety and other emotions that have become attached to their work. As a publication consultant, I support academics in navigating publishing options. This publication conversation is crucial, particularly for academics early in their careers, first-generation scholars, and others who have experienced problematic or uneven mentoring. One of the most gratifying aspects of my work is getting to see some authors through the whole process—from the late stages of research through drafts and peer review revisions.
My article clients have published in the top journals in their fields, from anthropology to history, philosophy and political science. My book clients publish with university presses from Oxford and Cambridge to Harvard, Rutgers, MIT, University of California, and Princeton. And most people work with me on both articles and books. Occasionally, universities bring me to campus for workshops or coaching faculty, and some universities have hired me to work with small cohorts of article writers over the course of the academic year.
My Background
Supporting authors has been my focus since 2001. I began this work at Emory University, where I worked with scholars across the university in book development for a decade. Then I was fortunate to be mentored in coaching by Dr. Sally Jensen and worked with her wonderful organization, ACW, for another 8 years, until her retirement. Since 2019, I’ve run my own business, working with faculty from a wide variety of institutions, from Princeton and Harvard to many schools in the University of California and other state systems and small private schools like Mount Holyoak College and Clemson University. While most often I work with scholars in the Humanities and Social Sciences, I also have enjoyed supporting researchers in Schools of Public Health, Law, and Medicine. For more about I coach clients moving from dissertation to book, see my article in the Journal of Scholarly Publishing.
